We all Knew, but Now It’s Official, Google Toolbar Influences Rankings
When speaking of Google in the SEO world we are quite used to figuring things out on our own. We have our suspicions, and some of them eventually turn out to be right, that was the case with Google Toolbar. For the past two years we were certain that Google Toolbar gathers data that has some influence on the SERP, some may know it for a fact, but it is only now after Google’s accusation of Bing stealing their result that Amit Singhal said that they use Google Toolbar to gather data which in certain ways has an influence on the SERP.
So the first question asked by SEO’s is how does it influence the SERP? Well, unfortunately for us Amit Singhal couldn’t disclose more than we already knew. It is used to monitor site speed which we know has a significant part in the Google’s algorithm for rankings and it also looks out for websites with malware. So nothing new there…
Aside the Google vs Bing affair that was popular recently the news that Google Toolbar is used for gathering data and that it influences SERP is not actually much of a news. We all knew it, now it’s just official, that is all there is to it. But it still raises the question, what data are they gathering and what of that data is actually influencing the SERP?
Well, we know the argument behind Google not letting out more info, they are afraid that we will use it to influence the SERP, and they are right, we would use it if possible. So what is actually Google Toolbar for, if you look at it from a different perceptive it is just another spyware. Yes, we could look at it in that fashion, it is on your computer used to get data, just like spyware, another freeware we gladly use to give out our privacy and let someone else gather their needed data. But what data, that is the real question, one that we will look into more closely and hopefully find another way to get our clients closer to the top.
