Online Branding Can be Fun

I know that big companies go through a lot of brainstorming meetings, hiring great creative people to present their brand in a new light, a better light and increase their brand awareness. Small companies and startups often don’t have the funds to do the same, but that doesn’t mean that they can’t present their brand in a great light with just the things they have, in fact, branding can be fun, it should be fun if you ask me.

Of course, not every brand will go for the funny idea, I get it, but that doesn’t mean that the same company can’t use something funny to help their brand and spread their original idea online. In fact, any company is more likely to attract attention and get a foothold within new demographics if they experiment a little with fun ideas that could easily get caught and spread by a social media junkie, and we know there are tons of them out there. That could easily mean a new viral hit.

I recently saw a presentation by Rand Fishkin where he is talking about the same idea, he even gave an example of a fine branding idea with using what you have in store. The company in question made a video of their designer working on the mascot, they presented something that they needed to do anyway and got a great result with just that, a process in which they created their mascot.

When we are talking about mascots, well, they are the first thing that comes to mind when you think of brands. In someone’s eyes, mascots are brands. A great looking mascot can be created without any special investments and it could be a great leverage in the future, of course, it’s also easier for people to remember you. I know that there is a whole science behind creating and leveraging your mascot, so I’m not going to pretend I know much, but I know what comes to mind when I think of MailChimp, Twitter, HootSuite and many other online brands.

The same can be said for your logo, design, even your Facebook page layout can be used for branding purposes, anything that makes you stand out. I know this is getting a little far away from the idea of branding being fun, but it is fun, and all the fun ideas that you have, no matter how dumb they may sound at first, or not related to your business, can be used to help your startup affirm itself in the online world.

With thousands of websites popping up every day you just have to stand out, with quality of your service, support, design, creativity, anything that will put you ahead of the competition, so don’t ignore all the branding ideas that pop up, you just might surprise yourself and everyone else, especially if they are fun.
