Google Webmaster Tools Dumps Three Redundant Features

Jonathon Simon, Google webmaster trends analyst reports on three features which will be removed from Google Webmaster Tools due to low usage or redundancy.

Features to be removed in the next two weeks:

  • Subscriber Stats
  • Create robots.txt
  • Site performance

We knew that some shape or form of clean-up was coming up as Google collected feedback from the webmaster community. We believe that “Internal Links” feature came close to being removed as well.

What to use instead?

For most webmasters a text editor will do just fine to replace the robots.txt tool. Subscriber stats are available from Feedburner as usual and the site performance metrics are now part of Google Analytics. Handy PageSpeed and YSlow tools are also an excellent (if not better) alternative to the old Google Webmaster Tools feature.

Site Speed

The further trim of Google’s tools is another sign of their determination to stay focused and work on products and features of Google’s core interest.
