Dan Petrovic Gets a Vanity URL on Google+


I heard that Google was starting to issue vanity URLs to selected few active and verified accounts so I decided to hack my own together, ahead of time.

OK, so it’s not very useful as it doesn’t lead anywhere, but it was an interesting experiment. The test involved telling Google that a page exists through links. The linked page, however was located on a disallowed directory: Disallow: /url so Googlebot didn’t index it in order to deem it a 404 page and exclude from its index.

It all started from my wondering what was going on here:


Now if you use the same search query you will see the non-existing URL I inserted in SERPs:


I just hope Google doesn’t do to me what they did to Oatmeal and make this my permanent shortlink.

  1. [Silly Question]: Do you think if we bombarded G+ with links to pages like this they might consider removing pages blocked by robots.txt from the index?
