Google Plus SEO Audit

Update: 8 January 2013

Somebody at Google has decided to use more rel=”nofollow” throughout Google+ and here’s an example:

nofollow-plus

URL within the post is nofollow, comment URL is nofollow, comment poster URL is nofollow (that was always like that) and the shared post URL is also nofollow.

Google Knowledge Carousel

A new Google Knowledge Graph feature was discovered today by Gyi Tsakalakis. In the source code it’s marked up only as “KL” but Googlers refer to it as the Knowledge Carousel.

What was the original name? If I could take a guess it would be something like:

  • Knowledge Link
  • Knowledge Lane
  • Knowledge List

Here’s how it looks like for Jamie Oliver “TV” triggered search:

YouTube Wants Your Real Name

YouTube now wants to know your real identity, not just your nickname. In efforts to create a ‘single unified product’ Google is self-canonicalising at every possible step and this is just one of them.

While editing one of my recent videos, I was offered to used my real name instead of my YouTube nickname:

As you can see my real identity was sourced from Google+ (which is known to reject profiles with made up names).

Are Google’s Social Reports Inaccurate?

In our latest observed case, Google+ reported only 25% of the +1′s on the page we monitored.

Is this a bug?

Navigate to Traffic > +1 Reports > Activity > All +1′s and you will see something like this:

Social Data

We recently had a sudden surge of +1′s for that particular URL and expected a more dramatic jump in the cumulative +1 graph.

Google+ Custom URL: Here’s what happens

Here’s what happens when Google+ offers you a vanity URL. Dejan SEO page was offered a custom URL so we took some screenshots. First, you will notice a dark gray bar saying “Your page is preapproved for the custom URL: google.com/+PageName [Claim URL] Learn More”.

Dan Petrovic Gets a Vanity URL on Google+

I heard that Google was starting to issue vanity URLs to selected few active and verified accounts so I decided to hack my own together, ahead of time.

SERP Injection Test

OK, so it’s not very useful as it doesn’t lead anywhere, but it was an interesting experiment.
